When he was 18 years old, Dick, an avid angler who was, at the time, working at an army surplus store, was asked to think of merchandize needed to start a fishing tackle and bait business by the storeowner.

Upon presenting his suggestions, the owner told him he had no idea what he was doing. Upset by the snub, Dick promptly quit and went to his grandmother to tell her what had happened.


With $300 from his grandmother, combined with his relentless work ethic, Dick opened his own tackle and bait shop and by 1958, he had expanded his product line to include many products one would find at DICK’S Sporting Goods stores today. As of March 2015, the company runs 610 stores in the U.S., primarily in the Eastern half of the country. The company also operates specialty retailers Golf Galaxy, Inc., Field and Stream, and True Runner.
